UCR Researcher Develops Novel Method to Grow Human Embryonic Stem Cells
Noboru Sato, an assistant professor of biochemistry, has devised a method of growing hESCs in the lab that uses no animal-derived materials – an important advance in the use of hESCs for future medical purposes.   (August 19, 2008)

Real Science, Real Jobs and Real Pay Through UCR Program
Community college students can clock in at a number of science-based businesses and put their classroom skills to the test as part of the UCR’s Copernicus Project Beckman Coulter Internship program. The program, named for the $50,000 annual grant from the Beckman Coulter Foundation, provides students a chance to work any combination of 40 hours and earn $20 an hour.   (August 13, 2008)
New Organization to Boost UCR Sports
As UC Riverside teams increasingly look to contend for conference titles, community leaders are forming the Highlanders Athletics Association to build regional support for the Division 1 athletics program that has produced championships in baseball, men’s golf, and women’s basketball and soccer, and individual national honors for athletes in a variety of sports.   (August 12, 2008)

Maxwell H. Gluck Foundation Awards $1 Million to UCR
The Gluck Fellows Program of the Arts at the University of California, Riverside has received a $1 million grant from the Maxwell H. Gluck Foundation to continue funding the arts outreach program through June 30, 2010.   (August 6, 2008)

UCR to Aid Former Foster Youth
Youth who have aged out of the foster-care system face numerous obstacles to earning a college degree, not the least of which are the lack of a family support system and the need for year-round housing. Quake Lecture Really Rocks
Students attending a lecture by UC Riverside Professor David Oglesby on earthquakes got more than they expected from the lesson on ground waves as a 5.4 magnitude earthquake rumbled through the campus. The Community College Internship program, sponsored by the Graduate School of Education "Copernicus Project," was in full swing Tuesday, July 29 when the quake hit at 11:42 a.m. near Chino Hills, California, about 30 miles west of Riverside.   (July 30, 2008)
